Memoir Project
Reflection
The purpose if the project was to create a presentation that was appealing to an audience of people who either skate or are interested in skating, told the story of a happy memory, and to practice the use of multimodal content. The specific audience is an English class at UNM as well as the general public and skaters. I chose to do a video because a good portion of students at UNM are skaters, as well as the impact this skate event has had on my life, plus how do you tell a story about skating without a skate video?
The rhetorical situation was “to share a story of an experience you had with friends or family at a party where your friends and/or family will be attending. The hostess has asked if you will create a short presentation for the attendees at the party”, I chose a five-day event/party with friends who are more like family and decided that some backstory would be very important to understanding and translating the meaning of each clip/photo, especially as we moved through the event.
I was initially not amused with the software on my computer (Picasa was taking too long to download). There was an extreme lack of transition software but was otherwise decent, just nothing special. It was what I had available, and I had a limited amount of time to gather the information, formulate and polish. Picasa took too long to download, my editing software that came with the computer lacks transition software (inability to fade, pixel out, or transfer from one audio recording to the next) which led to a feeling of the presentation being choppy and reevaluating my choice in music to a song that was long enough to cover the whole presentation. Some of the videos needed sound to be removed, and one of the photos needed to be vectorized and have text laid over the original image to reduce pixilation. Photopea was the life saver for recovering the image that needed to be vectorized, and I tried to cut and edit clips for a smother transition from one to the next.

I liked that it was fairly simple despite the technological difficulties, and everything was reasonable accessible (stole a couple pictures off my Instagram). It was nice to create a skate video and see myself on camera, normally I get skipped over in skate videos because I go at my own pace and work on specific things, not just going wild trying everything that people suggest because they think it would be “cool”. It was great when one of the students in class showed me how to find premiere pro for free, smooth sailing after that. I completely restarted with the same clips and audio that I had in my initial drafts. During Media Lab I was able to get access to the media software I was hoping for, Premiere Pro. Once I had Premiere I was able to create smooth and flowing transitions which was my main issue with the prior software.
I think this was a fun assignment and I would like to continue with this kind of work, if possible. I would appreciate having assignment and due date reminders earlier in the week. I commute to UNM from Santa Fe, work when not in school, and am supporting myself in my education endeavor. It can be hard to do assignments with my limited time and the sooner I know about them the more prepared I can be.
The same day!
Credits go to all the wonderful Ditch Slap Skaters, Skate School Santa Fe, Paris Trucks, Drang, Landyacht, Black Lab, Caliper, and many more. If I have not listed you I apologize but still have you in mind.
